{ Runnin’ n Rainin’ }

Dis weekend, a couple of my friends are taking part in dis year’s Standard Chartered Marathon.

It is a time for our local running enthusiasts to get together, and showcase their hard work, challenging themselves to set personal records. Or at least, try their best to 👍

It is oso a chance for our best national runners to go against some of the world’s literal best runners from Africa…. and get absolutely mogged.

It’s like tryna beat a sumo wrestler at sumo. U just can’t…

As for my friends, most of them wld be participating in the half-marathon (21km), and some in the 10km.

Ofc, it being dis time of the year (the second of such, annually) I was naturally wondering: Wat’s gonna happen if there’s a thunderstorm during the run? Can’t just outrun the lightning, can they?

While most of them told me to touch wood saying dat, they oso told me they won’t care abt the weather; they’ll just continue to run, no matter how far more they have, or how bad it gets. There is zero intention of putting all those weeks of training to waste.

I’d think dat YOLO mindset wld change if the weather actly gets rlly bad. I mean, I wldn’t wanna continue running if it starts looking like dis:

Or maybe…. they just rlly like running….

While I think dat commitment is 2hardcore4me , I can sorta see where they’re coming from.

Sometimes while I’m out running, it starts raining while I’m like halfway thru, and it’ll progressively get heavier.

But unless there’s lightning, I won’t stop going.

Idk why, but I feel like an absolute badass when I’m doing so. Maybe becos it’s sorta like going against nature. Doing outdoor things when I shouldn’t be outdoors. Some feeling of empowerment, u noe? Can’t help but oso feel like Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump, in the boat:

Yea… and I oso attribute it to my imagination. Running in the heavy rain instantly puts images of drenched footballers in my head.

I always love it when it starts pouring during games on TV. Ofc, wif the modern, standard quality of camera today, u can barely tell when it’s raining, until it zooms in on the players, and they’re a wet, filthy mess.

But I think dats actly cool af. It’s like they’re going to war, u noe. Doesn’t matter if they’re soaking wet and covered in mud. It only matters dat they get the ball into enemy territory. For those 90 mins, not even a storm can stop these 2 armies of 11 men, from going abt their “mission”.

Running in the rain makes me feel just a lil bit like them. It’ll be especially felt during my final lap. At dat point, it’s Vic vs The World. Can’t let the intense headwind, dats blowing rain directly at my damn face, get to me. No I’m finishing dis race…. even if it means death 😠

Ofc, the nature of my running is nowhere near as intense as any of those guys. But, I’d think there’s some similarities in why people continue running, even when conditions become less than ideal…

Or maybe…. they just rlly like running….
