{ Beach Episode: Part 1 }

U noe how there’s beach volleyball? The beach version of regular volleyball, with less people, and played exclusively by giants?

There’s oso beach soccer, like futsal, but on sand, which actly makes it way more tiring than it seems.

Then there’s beach rugby, which I only learnt abt becos of my friend, whom we’ll call Teddy Bear (or Teddy for short) in dis story.

So a couple months ago, Teddy’s rugby club was involved in a beach rugby event, which was all the way at Siloso Beach. He invited me to come and watch his team play.

So ofc I went to support him, and check out wat his team was all abt. I was oso low-key curious to see if there’s anything new at Sentosa, having not been there in a while.

After the many MRT stops and walking (as I refuse to take the monorail), I finally arrived at the crowd of burly men and women, loud music, and alcohol.

Something like dis, but more local and chaotic

Not exactly my kind of environment, but eh, I’m willing to indulge every once in awhile. Helps dat Teddy was here, alongside some of his friendly teammates who were easy to bond wif.

Unfortunately, my interactions wif them had to be short and periodic, as they had quite a pack schedule of games.

It was something like 4 games, a game every hour, each lasting about 10-15 minutes. They oso needed abt the same amount of time to warm up and cool down, which means I cld only rlly be wif them for abt 20 mins each hour.

During their games, I’d make it a point to act as their camera man, attempting to catch some of their highlights. But honestly, I cldnt rlly tell wat was going on like, half the time. I was just having fun recording whatever looked cool, and hoped it’d be of use to them…

Anyways, dat meant I had quite abit of time to myself.

So initially, I spent it trynna talk to strangers wif the limited rugby knowledge I had, then smoothly exiting when the conversations started getting too technical…

But ofc, me being me, I got bored of dat place fast. Conversations were shallow, and being around loud and drunk dudes wif loud EDM music in the background wasn’t exactly fun…

So I left, and started wandering around like a “Wolverhampton“, away from the event site, and to the more common areas.

I was walking along the beach, on the pathways, bought some questionably overpriced tourist trap drinks, enjoyed the views, walked some more along the shore, and in the water occasionally. Ooh yes, I became a tourist in my own country ☺️

Then it was almost time for Teddy’s next game, so I began my return to the rugby event site.

Just as I stepped out of the water, I heard a whistle. I didn’t think much of it, so I continued walking.

Then it became a soft “hi”. Again, I didn’t think too much.

Then the next “Hi” was more audible. Still gentle, but louder. It caught my attention enough to look around, to see where it was coming from…

Upon turning, I see 5 smiling ladies calling out to me. They seemed a lil older, probably in their late 20s, and were definitely not part of the rugby event. Just regular beach goers…
