Sometimes I think abt wat it’s like to have younger siblings. I think it’d be amusing to dote over them, regardless of how old they get. Being annoyingly affectionate to them despite their age sounds fun 😊….

…
Ok maybe now it seems fun. Being grown and matured and all… I tend to forget abt the actual interactions I had while I was still growing up wif my cousins…

.
…ok becos me and them are around the same age, and the term “first cousin once removed” is silly and dumb, I will go ahead and refer to them as my cousins for dis entry.
.
There was dis one particular cousin. She was genuinely rlly annoying, lol. I met her for the first time around 2009, which made me abt 6 or 7. She’s abt 3 years younger (I dun rmb exactly, lol).
Til then I had always been the youngest, among siblings and among cousins. So when I met someone smaller who cld talk, I oready had my doubts.

My instincts proved rite as she proceeded to be an absolute menace. An overly active little girl who found the need to involve me in more things than I wld have liked. She oso seemed to only channel her energy towards me for whatever reason, which was… not easy….
I remember trying to stay low-key, minding my own business. Then she’d pop out of nowhere, and start annoying me and making me do things wif her. I didn’t rlly noe how to say no. But deep down I was just like bruh pls leave me alone… 😖

.
She talked alot. A lot alot. She seemed to find joy in teasing me relentlessly for some reason, and oso making fun of me. She was rather unfiltered for her age. Though, maybe dats just how city kids are like over there (?)…
But still though. 7-year-old me did not think dat was very nice. I always tot wait a minute, aren’t u supposed to be more respectful to me, the older one ?? 😣…
I oso rmb the fact dat nobody else found her annoying for wtv reason. Like u noe in TV shows when there’s some baby character who everyone goes awwww with, but only like one character sees through dis, and knows how evil they rlly are. But nobody believes them?

Yea dats how it was like wif her 😤…
She made me stressed sometimes as a result, ngl. I rmb being overwhelmed by her, and crying sometimes 🤦… Ofc not in front of her (otherwise she’d most definitely tease me abt it). But I did wipe away tears discreetly… I rmb dat being among my first experience of crying from stress…
I oso rmb when it was time for my family to go back to Singapore. Then she cried rlly hard. Ngl, little me nvr felt bad for her lol. It’s like hehehehe dis wat u get u lil she-devil 😈….

… yea I’m not very proud of my young self for dat…
.
I only ever meet her like once a year, maybe twice at most. Each time we went back I had to prepare myself. Make sure I’m not getting sucker punched by her antics…

.
Some years passed by. Her hair grew longer. She was still annoying for a lil while. But less so. She wasn’t making fun of every little thing I was doing, which was gr8…
When it came time for us to leave again, she didn’t cry. She just smiled. I took notice. The first indication that she’s matured…
.
More years passed. Suddenly she was a teenager, wif two younger siblings – a little sister, and a littlest brother.
It was now those two dat were causing havoc in the house, and her sister dat kept disturbing me. But I think I was older and more prepared for it by then. So it was more sweet than anything 😊
.

.
But she (the main cousin) was different by now. She wasn’t playing around in the house anymore. She was quieter, and didn’t talk to us much anymore, wif the exception of the few polite conversations. Her voice and gaya / mannerisms were oso different, as she was beginning to act more like her mother (my actual cousin). Appearance-wise, she started to look sorta like the girl from dis one band called Vierra:

Which sorta made me wonder how r we even related…
.
She was oso more shy around me. Which sorta made sense, as she was at the age where she was busy doing teenage girl things like…. hmmm…. 🤔….
….
anyways….
While a small part of me felt relief dat I dun have to deal wif the the unhinged child she used to be, a bigger part was sad dat those days have passed us. Besides, I wld’ve been much more able to deal wif dat version of her now…
It’s like I wanna tell her: hey rmb those good times? Yea, I’m still dat same guy. We can still have fun, and do what we used to 🙂…
…
But I noe dats not how it works. Things aren’t the same as it used to be. We grow up. We stopped playing wif toys and constantly bickering wif each other. She’s in her teenage years, while I was almost out of it…
Life goes on. Changes in time spent and responsibilities. Changes within the family itself (some gone, some still here). And changes in family dynamics (however bittersweet they may be…).
I’m sure the young version of me wld never consider dat I wld miss getting tormented by her. Nor wld I have even thought of the kind of woman she wld grow into. I guess the quote is true:
