{ Going Backwards }

Being assigned the group leader of a project sucks becos u noe u have to take the blame for any mistake dat happens. Ur oso supposed to set a model example, so as to be a gd influence to the rest. Ofc, if ur passionate abt dat project, it’ll come quite naturally.

But when u dun rlly care abt the project dat much, being forced to act like u do is a real pain in where the light doesn’t shine.

.

As much as I dun like to lead assignments dat I have little genuine concern for, sometimes when u look at the others ur grouped with, ur just like…. yea… maybe I shld take charge, eh…

.

Ofc, I have no personal ill feelings towards any of my peers. I think they are wonderful ppl, in their various unique but respectable ways.

But when it comes to the task of leading a group project specifically, I believe some of them do not yet have the competency to act as required.

Among them, the ones who low-key rlly grind my gears is those who put in minimal “manual” effort into the work. I noe dat the term “manual” is abit of a stretch, considering the digitalised nature of schoolwork (or most work in first world countries actly) today…

But wat I mean is ppl who refuse to try and think critically as best as they can. Instead, they are over-reliant on ChatGPT.

Any assignment, any queries, even any random questions posed in class, their instincts automatically get them to ask it on ChatGPT. They won’t even try to think about it for themselves. Instead, they prefer their answers to come solely in the form of bullet points and unnatural human speech, wif terms dat u noe they have zero knowledge on…

Ofc, I’m not saying ChatGPT itself is bad. In fact, it’s mighty useful. It’s rlly like Google, but for oddly specific questions. It’s oso saved my ass a couple of times. Nobody wants to read a 200 page report. Neither do they wanna spend hours finding and citing their sources now, do they? 🤔

The problem arises mainly from the way some of them r using it. Instead of being a luxury, it essentially becomes a necessity. It’s oso a problem dat dissuading them from utilising it so unapologetically is not easy.

Dis inevitably carries over to their lives outside of work, and can be seen in things like some of their lack of ability to give personal views on everyday topics. When they do decide to speak, it tends to be solely abt their narrow set of interests. Once u try to diverge a little bit, they go quiet again. Some people around me genuinely struggle to hold a decent conversation, as they are relying more on their devices to store their information, rather than their minds.

In a way, I feel it stems from reduced natural curiosity. Which is not good, considering it’s fundamental in growing our comprehension of the world. Instead, more and more people have sorta grown content to just sticking wif wat they’re used to. There just isn’t the same amount of incentive in gaining knowledge today, as it had in the past.

Dis wld be especially worrying for those whose knowledge and interests comes mainly from TikTok. Mostly cos the algorithm is designed to draw u in wif eye-catching captions, even if they’re straight up false.

While learning new things from TikTok is fine, those posts shld entice us to research more abt the topic outside of the app. One’s curiosity wld normally be like, the main driver for doing so.

Instead, stopping at just what we see in dat post is gonna lead to superficial understanding, which likely results in some misinformation. Dis cld then snowball into more significant issues, like sexism and racism, as their incorrect understanding from the questionable sources pile up.

.

It therefore wld be important dat everyone develops their ability to think critically b4 being exposed to wide array of shit online. Over-reliance on AI hinders dis development.

While I noe dat using AI gives us answers dat look nice and smarter than anything we might ever come up wif. But u noe, AI only has answers from articles written by people in the past. It took these people a certain level of knowledge, as well as creativity, to be able to write those things back then, wif a lot of effort, time, and critical thinking.

…Hopefully, dis ChatGPT reliance doesn’t become a routine for too many ppl. Otherwise, well, we’re sort of screwed. Can’t just have years of intellectual and literacy progression start going backwards now, can we?
