I have mixed feelings about holiday trips wif my family. For one thing, being in a foreign country wif them means significant reduction of my alone time, as there’s 5 of us in the family. It wld also mean stress as they seem to enjoy really filling up the schedule there, making days feel like weeks.
Though, I do keep in the back of my mind dat my parents are getting older. So I do need to show my gratitude to them for keeping me alive and not homeless, for the past many years. I wld like them to have an enjoyable time, cos das wat a good son’s supposed to do.
Am currently in dis situation, and feeling tired and homesick. I miss my space. And my walks. It’s oso not particularly fun having my patience tested on the daily.
Dat being said, dis place is still nice, esp during evening time when the sky looks pretty. Just not my cup of tea overall, u noe? So, it’s likely more of a “me” problem than a “them” problem.
Thankfully, it’s not all doom-y and gloomy. I’m appreciative dat I have my phone wif me all the time. Das becos of its most important feature to me, in dat they act as MP3 players in today’s world.
I think music is my greatest emotional support. Dat, and oso the photo card of Rosé I have at the back of my phone (becos I like to pretend I have a cool and trendy noona in my life to look up to, who’s also nice enough to care about me 👉👈).

During times of missing home such as dis, I always find myself listening to my fav songs on repeat. Ofc, I dun rlly have a fixed set of “favourite songs”, as it changes quite frequently. But here’s wat brings me joy at this current moment:

1. 栄光の架橋 (Eikou no Kakehashi)
Dis one’s by a band called YUZU. I first heard it back home thru Spotify shuffle many years ago. Then, heard it again in the streets in Tokyo, during my visit to Japan a couple years back. Since then, I’ll always remember it.
It’s a rlly inspiring song abt perseverance, the pain suffered along the way, and now reaping the fruits of that labour.
But honestly even if u didn’t understand the lyrics, u wld probably get the intended vibe just by hearing the music, and also the tone its sung in. Sounds like something straight out of a motivational anime video.
In fact, I think dis was used during the promotion of the 2004 Olympics, in Japan. Ofc I’m not old enough to remember, but I’m sure footage of it exists online.

2. Insomnia
Dis one’s a blessing from Craig David.
My liking for it at the moment has less to do wif the funky beat and tune. It’s the fact dat Craig David can’t go to sleep. U see, I’ve oso (Jim) beenz unable to sleep well the past few nights. U noe why? Cos my dad snores. And like, rlly loudly.
The sound of it is unsettling. It’s like he has a broken harmonica stuck in his throat, dat inevitably plays whenever he breaths at night. So I’m just there in my bed like:

It takes me at least 30 mins to go to bed, as I needa phase out the snoring beforehand. And dats when I’m oready feeling tired as hell. I therefore resonate strongly wif dis song the past few days. Feels like insomnia (woahhhh).

3. Now We Are Free
This one’s from the movie Gladiator. It’s in a made-up language, so nobody understands it. But it’s still a really beautiful song.
The movie Gladiator’s rlly interesting to me. The plot was pretty basic, and the historical inaccuracies were quite obvious.
But somehow, it more than compensated for those flaws wif the soundtrack, the acting, the visuals. Ooh the visuals were reaaal gooood. It’s like I was rlly in Rome, esp during those scenes in the towns and the colosseum. Must’ve been quite an experience for those who watched it in the cinema back in 2000.
The plot revolved around our main character, the infallible and stoic Russell Crowe, trynna stop Joaquin Phoenix from taking over the world or whatever. Basic hero stuff, but wif gladiators.
However, the part I find amusing if u rlly think abt it, is dat our main character here rlly just wanted to go home. He wanted to reunite wif his family, but becos of shit beyond his control, he couldn’t. Then he had to unwillingly go on dis whole-ass quest, which became the story of the movie.
I mean, he eventually does sorta get his reunion in the end (though in a sad way). But, u noe, I think overall, u shld experience it urself to judge it’s worth. Its prolly good enough to give a shot.
Yea. So a movie abt a guy dat wants to go home. Sounds familiar??

While there are other songs I listen to, I think those 3 above in particular are giving me the additional energy needed thru dis trip rite now. For abt 4 more days now… ✊
Dear Yishun. Soon I will be free. We will meet again. But not yet. Not yet…
